Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Info@TheGorhamHomestead.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Raw milk has been consistently shown to be more nutritious than pasteurized milk because it has not been heated and denatured.  It is still in it's purely natural form.  Some of our members who believed that they were lactose intolerant actually process and tolerate our A2A2 raw milk just fine.  All of the natural vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins remain in the original state and our members tell us they can FEEL the difference.

To sign up you will need to FIRST email us to find out if we have any available share. If so, you will pay the $50.00 per share "buy in" fee, your first month's boarding fee (per share) and then review and sign a herdshare agreement.  We must have this on file for EVERY member.  No exceptions.

Each share is equal to one gallon per week.  We offer half shares that is equal to one-half gallon per week.  The milk is bottled in half gallon glass jars because our members appreciate less plastic.  Contact us for current pricing.

Yes!  We have an on-farm lab where we test each batch of milk daily and hold for 24 hours before releasing that milk to our members.  We test for coliform and E-Coli daily. While this is NOT a guarantee that the milk is 100% pathogen free, it is an extra step that we have added to make sure that we are doing everything we can to mitigate any risk.  We follow strict protocols from the beginning to the end of the process because we do not take our responsibility lightly.  We also do yearly health testing on our herd, rapid chill our milk for safety and flavor and hold samples of each batch for 90 days for documentation.

We raise primarily Jersey cows.  We have started to include a few crosses like Guernsey and Holstein for some diversity in both the milk and our genetics.  The cows we milk for members are all A2A2

Our cows are primarily grass fed and rotated on pasture.  They get a small amount on Non GMO grain, BOSS, alfalfa, kelp and vitamin E while in the stanchion.

Absolutely!  We will be happy to show you our girls so you can see that they are happy, healthy and living in clean conditions.  We believe that members should see where their milk is coming from in order to make informed decisions.

It is not disputed that raw milk can contain dangerous pathogens if not handled properly.  Consistent written and strictly followed procedures are paramount to producing safe raw milk.

Know your farmer, see the cows, ask questions.  You are a partner within any herdshare and that's the beauty of it.

In Tennessee, it is illegal to outright sell raw milk.  When you buy into a herdshare, you are purchasing ownership in the herd.  The farmer is simply milking your cows on your behalf. We believe this is the best model because it protects the member as well as the farmer.  The member gets to see exactly where their milk is coming from, ask the farmer questions and most importantly, builds a relationship with their farmer.

In turn, the monthly "boarding fee" provides a predictable income which is used to care for the herd and run the farm.  Since each member has a designated pickup day, it also helps the farmer to distribute milk evenly throughout the week which minimizes milk waste. This lowers the amount of stress on the farmer.

We believe that on-farm milk sales through the herdshare model is by FAR the best model for everyone.  The herdshare is a family. You are part of a community and it is one of the MOST valuable ways that you can contribute to keeping small dairies alive.

If you let us know before the close of business, we will hold your milk for you until the next day if needed. (Except Sundays, we are closed)

Also, if you are going to be out of town, we can freeze your milk for you in a BPA free beverage bag for a $2 bag fee and you can pick it up when you return.  Milk that is not picked up without making arrangements will be forfeited.

No. It is in our welcome email and our herdshare agreement that it is the member's responsibility to return their jars clean and dry including the lid.  It is our job to provide clean fresh raw milk.  It is the member's responsibility to bring back a clean sanitized vessel to put it in.  We provide the set of jars but the member must keep them cleaned.

Moisture breeds bacteria and repeated failure to properly return the jars may result in removal from the herdshare.

We will provide a new jar at no charge unless it becomes a frequent occurrence then we will need to charge for the replacement.

Welcome to The Gorham Homestead

Keepin it Real

We are a small, family-run farm that specializes in raw milk, free-range livestock and any other natural product that we might come up with. Our farm is located in the beautiful countryside holler, where we enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature. We believe in sustainable farming practices and use only natural methods to grow our crops and raise our livestock. During our workshop season, we teach a host of old-fashioned homesteading skills such as canning, home dairy, chicken processing and building your home apothecary.  At The Gorham Homestead, we are committed to providing our customers with the freshest, healthiest, and most delicious food possible.

What makes us different:

We believe natural living and good science can coexist.

We don't rely on hype, fear or miracle claims.

We raise healthy cows, lab test our milk daily, teach practical skills, and help families make realistic changes that fit into everyday life.

Most people join for the milk.

Many stay for the confidence, education, community, and peace of mind that comes from knowing where their food comes from.
